We've been reading about whales and so did a couple of experiments on echolocation.
For this one, I led a blindfolded kid around the room so he wouldn't know exactly where he was. Then the kid throws a ball and tries to guess how close to the wall he is by listening to the ball bounce.
For this one, one kid holds a paper cone to his ear, and the other kid talks through one. The kids have to face a wall and listen to the sound bounce back. Try bouncing your voice off different surfaces such as a glass mirror or a refrigerator to learn that different materials will make your echo sound different.
