Softball

Jeremiah has been playing softball, and I haven't been able to go to the games. They're too late at night. Monday's game, however, was at 6:30, so we all went. And we all had fun. :)

Vittles For Littles: Strawberries and Chocolate

We've been having some fun strawberry snacks with all the strawberries we recently picked. Our first one is just strawberries and chocolate, an absolutely perfect pair.
All you need is melted chocolate, melted white chocolate, fresh strawberries, and toothpicks. I melted the chocolate in bowls before giving it to the kids. The plate to the left has strawberries with interesting shapes for more imaginative decorating potential.

I let Zahana and Rohan each have a little plate with melted chocolate and strawberries for dipping.

Miah and Larkin used the toothpicks and chocolate to decorate their strawberries with funny faces.

I couldn't resist a little play too.
A school of fish.

Kissy face.

Funny noses.

Here's a link for someone who really knows how to play with food. These pictures are really neat!

If you decide to try decorating strawberries, let us know. We'd love to hear about it!

More Strawberry Picking!

We picked strawberries again yesterday. (Rutherford's this time, locals.)
Rohan was awake this time and loved it.

He kept stealing strawberries out of everyone's boxes and stuffing them in his mouth. He was a mess by the time we left.

Look at those angel eyes!

She was a mess by the time we left too - found the only mud in the whole field and wallowed in it while my back was turned!

The bounty.

This time we had chocolate ice cream with fresh strawberries afterward.

I love fresh strawberries!

Strawberry Picking

Strawberry picking time is much anticipated in our house. We love fresh strawberries, and picking them is almost as good as eating them. When we called the strawberry patch on Thursday, they said they didn't officially open until Saturday but they wouldn't turn us away. So, we were the first customers of the year and had the whole patch to ourselves!

Rohan spent the whole time sleeping.

More pictures of the farm.

After washing the berries and counting by twos . . .

. . . we ate strawberry shortcake. Mmmm!

Cousins in the Forest Room

What a special treat we had last weekend! Cousins from out of state came to our house for the first time. We had a really great time, especially the kids.
We took them to the mountains. It rained off and on, but that didn't dampen our spirits. The kids started out with an Easter egg hunt.
(We were all passing the camera around, so I don't know who took which pictures.)

And a picnic.

Then hiking and playing in the woods, the creek, and around the old cabins.

The kids had fun playing a little baseball before we went out for ice cream.

The day ended with setting up our big tent in the living room for the kids to sleep in. What a wonderful time we had! We just wish it was longer.

Light and Warmth

We've been cooped up in the house too long with cold and rain. With a one-year-old and a two-year-old, it's not easy to get out into the woods in all weather. But joy of joys, the sun has been out this week, and we went to the woods.
We saw lots of little critters. My favorite was this tiny grasshopper that had just shed its skin.

We played in the creek, climbed rocks and logs, and Larkin even found a morel all by himself!

More pictures from our day. Enjoy the show!

To bring the human race, family by family, child by child, out of the savage and inhuman desolation where He is not, into the light and warmth and comfort of the presence of God, is no doubt, the chief thing we have to do in the world. . . . The highest duty imposed upon [the parent], it is also the most delicate; and he will have infinite humility, gentleness, love, and sound judgment, if he would present his child to God and the thought of God to the soul of his child. - Charlotte Mason

Spring On The Shelf

Some new spring-themed Montessori activities especially for Zahana but enjoyed by the others as well.

It was pretty tricky to manipulate the tongs, but she kept working at it.

Not so tricky for Larkin.

Rohan placed the eggs with his hand.

And worked on opening and closing.

Color matching.

Matching the colors wasn't that difficult. Fitting the pieces together was more of a challenge.

I intended this to be a bead-stringing-type activity. Beads, pipe cleaners with one end twisted, and flowers and leaves cut out of foam and cardstock.

Zahana turned this into a flower-making activity. "For you!" she said.

The flowers Zahana made.

"This is the period in which discipline becomes established: a form of active peace, of obedience and love, when work is perfected and multiplied, just as when the flowers in spring get their colors and prepare a distant harvest of sweet and nourishing fruit."
